University leads way in enrolling disadvantaged students
Abertay University aims to take into account social and educational backgrounds.
Abertay University is leading the way in Scotland when it comes to enrolling students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Further and Higher Education Minister met with current and former undergraduates who have benefited from the introduction of access thresholds.
The institution takes into account the social and educational backgrounds of an applicant during the admissions process.
"Academic achievements can tell you so much but it's important that the best students can be encouraged to apply to university, and that means looking at the whole experience," said MSP Shirley-Anne Somerville.
"Abertay is leading from the front in this, but there are challenges for other universities to do the same."
Abertay University graduate, Cheryl Torano, said: "This has totally changed my life, and my kids lives.
"I have two kinds and I'm now able to support them comfortably.
"I'm hoping that they'll see that I've gone to university and that they'll follow in my path and go a bit further - so it's not only benefited me, but it's benefited my kids as well."
