Parents have hit out at a local council after it said a high school would be closed, only to change its mind at 11.20pm the night before.

Angus Council announced at 5pm on Tuesday that Carnoustie High School was to be closed on Wednesday due to a gas supply issue, but then announced at 11.20pm that they were now opening.

In the announcement, Angus Council said: "Work tonight has resolved the gas supply issue and we're pleased to report that Carnoustie High WILL be open tomorrow.

"Apologies for the lateness of the hour and any inconvenience."

Parents took to social media to express their anger at the lateness of the announcement, with one parent calling it a "joke".

Parent Eddie Dougan responded by saying: "What an atrocious way to handle this.

"You're told your children are off then wake up to 'luckily' see a post when you get up for work seeing that you changed your decision at 11.22pm!"

While another parent, Fiona Laing, voiced concerns about other parents missing the announcement.

She said: "What about those who won't get the announcements but will miss school and their exam assignments tomorrow?"
