Public warned not to salvage timber after ship sheds load
The timber was lost overboard from a ship off Newcastle almost three weeks ago.
Fife Council has joined calls warning the public not to salvage wooden planks which have been washed up on beaches along the east coast of Scotland.
About 200 timber bundles were lost overboard from the cargo vessel Frisian Lady during severe weather on March 2 when she was 130 miles off Newcastle.
The bundles drifted north and broke up into planks as they made their 100-mile journey and has been found washed up near St Andrews.
Police have said that the coastline can be dangerous, with strong tides, deep water and rocky areas.
Environment and Building Services senior manager John Rodigan said: "Fife Coast and Countryside Trust is leading on the clean up for us in Fife and teams are now deployed to look for salvage on the shore line.
"When any salvage is identified, information will be passed to our parks, streets and open spaces teams to organise its removal as quickly as possible.
"We don't need the public to report locations to us or the police as the situation is being regularly assessed."
