One of the world's best known pieces of classical music was performed in Doric for the first time at the weekend.

Handel's "Messiah" was performed in the north-east dialect in a concert at St Machar Cathedral in Aberdeen on Saturday.

Singers took part in workshops during today with a final performance conducted by composer Professor Paul Mealor.

The concert, produced by the Elphinstone Institute, featured performances from top soloists with opening remarks by Scottish entertainer Robert Lovie.

Dr Thomas McKean from the Elphinstone Institute said: "I think it is a great imitative to take Doric, north-east Scots, to a place that it hasn't or hasn't often or has rarely been.

"There are Doric translations of the Bible, there are Scots translations of the Bible, so we took this as an opportunity to spread the langue into areas where it is not normally found."
