A midwife for NHS Tayside has been awarded Midwife of the Year 2018 for the Scottish region.

Nominated by local mum Julie Davidson, Michelle Carter was given the prestigious award that recognises the incredible work done by midwives across the country.

Emma's Diary and Royal College of Midwives Mums' Midwife of the Year award is to specifically highlight midwives who helped "when nobody else would listen".

The duo formed a close bond ten years ago when Ms Carter supported Ms Davidson through the heartache of losing her twin girls after going into premature labour at 22 weeks.

Two years later, Ms Davidson's son Finn was born and was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome at birth.

During this emotional time, Ms Carter was present again and offered her a friendly face and words of encouragement during their hospital stay.

The midwife then helped her to have her second son, and then after two miscarriages Ms Carter helped her have her third child.

Ms Davidson said: "Throughout my whole pregnancy Michelle was only a call or a text away, even getting in touch with me on her days off to make sure I was OK, or see how my hospital appointments went.

"My anxiety was heightened throughout my pregnancy - Michelle totally got that and was there to chat about my worries and put my mind at rest.

"I can't even put into words how special it's been, having Michelle by my side throughout our journey to becoming a family of 5.

"She is an amazing midwife, and now a lovely friend."

The overall winner will be announced at an award ceremony in London on March 6.
