A man was left with a broken jaw after being caught breaking into a house in Dundee.

Ryan Souter, 27, realised he was being robbed when he saw the door to his house at Downfield Golf Club lying open while he was outside having a cigarette.

He shouted to tell his girlfriend, who was in bed, that the TV was missing and she contacted the police.

Mr Souter then heard a noise outside and found Cezary Okuniewski, 47, drinking one of his beers outside with the stolen television lying against a hedge.

When he shouted the thief tried to punch him, but Mr Souter managed to hold him for six minutes until the police arrived.

Okuniewski sustained a hairline fracture to the jaw and was taken to hospital for treatment.

He admitted all charges and was jailed for 20 months.

Solicitor Mike Short told of how the accused lost his job because of the injuries he sustained.

Sheriff Wade said: "It took place at an isolated dwelling house in the middle of the night.

"It must have been a frightening experience for the victims of your crime."
