New campaign shows antibiotics not effective against cold
A video campaign has been launched to avoid growing resistance to medication.
A new video campaign has been launched to remind patients that antibiotics do not work in treating colds and flu.
The video featuring children from Aberdeen's Broomhill primary school has been developed by NHS Grampian.
The health board are encouraging people to only use antibiotics when they are needed to help with the growing resistance to some medication.
Local GP Dr Stephen Lynch said: "As the cold and flu season gets into full swing, it's important to remember that antibiotics won't help with these kinds of infections.
"Colds, flu, most coughs, sinusitis, ear infections and sore throats often get better without antibiotics, as your body can usually fight these infections on its own."
He continued: "There's no doubt that we've overused antibiotics in the past, and now it's quite common to see infections in Aberdeen that are resistant to antibiotics.
"What we're trying to do is to ensure that when we are using antibiotics we are using them appropriately for the right infections and not for the normal winter viral infections where an antibiotic won't make any difference."
