Girls have been encouraged to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) at an event in Dundee.

A total of 24 pupils in their third year were given the opportunity to explore classes and get hands on experience at Dundee and Angus College on Friday.

The event covered STEM subjects that are not predominantly seen as female focused and aimed to suppress the stigma surrounding those industries.

To grasp an understanding of engineering techniques, the girls designed a bridge and tested its strength, examine greenhouse effects and witness how tension is tested in materials.

Construction and technology course leader John Mitchell said: "D&A College recognises the importance of STEM subjects to the UK's skills base.

"As a major provider of training in these disciplines we work closely with teachers and career advisers to help encourage school leavers to opt for science or engineering subjects.

"Events like this one help break down outmoded stereotypes about who studies what at college and demonstrates that girls 'do' science, technology, engineering and maths too."
