The festive event will take place in the Tower Building at Dundee University
Vintage image projectors will be used for a Christmas exhibition at Dundee University.
Magic lantern performer Dr Jeremy Brooker, will present A Grand Gothic Magic Lantern Christmas for the Arts and Humanities Research Institute (AHRI) Christmas Lecture the Tower Building on Wednesday.
First developed in the 17th century, they reached their peak of popularity in Victorian times.
Dr Brooker will use 18th, 19th and 20th century lanterns and original Victorian glass to create a fast-moving show, featuring dissolve effects.
Reader in English at the university, Dr Keith Williams said: "Magic lantern shows were as widely known and watched as cinema, television and the internet are now, and indeed these media would not have developed without them.
"This extraordinary event will allow us to experience the awe a Victorian audience would have felt."
