Record-breaking cyclist inspires Aberdeen athletes
Mark Beaumont recently cycled the globe in 79 days, breaking the world record.
A record-breaking long-distance Scottish cyclist inspired future athletes at an event in Aberdeen on Tuesday.
Mark Beaumont, who recently cycled the globe in 79 days, spoke at Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) to inspire local athletes and coaches by sharing his secrets to completing ultra endurance challenges.
He explained to attendees how he maintained his mental and physical strength while crossing 16 countries and cycling 16 hours every day during the Artemis World Cycle Challenge.
The challenge, which he completed in July, saw Mark cycle 18,000 miles around the world.
During the expedition he experienced three serious falls, sub-zero temperatures and forest fire smog.
His feat beat the previous world record of 123 days.
ASV chief executive Duncan Sinclair said: "At ASV we are dedicated to developing world-class athletes, most recently with the University of Aberdeen Performance swimming team, and our new high performance diving programme.
"We have a wealth of talent in Aberdeen and this is a great opportunity for our athletes and their coaches to learn from the best in sport."
Mr Beaumont said: "It is great to be back in Aberdeen and I hope my experiences can help encourage athletes of the future.
"The around the world in 80 days cycle was undoubtedly the most punishing challenge I have ever put myself through.
"Each stage brought different climates and changing terrains, and I hope some of my experiences will inspire the next generation of endurance sportsmen and women."
