Oil workers could strike if Super Pumas return to the North Sea, a union has warned.

A total of 33 people have died in three fatal accidents involving the helicopters since 2009.

They were grounded in the wake of a crash in Norway last year but were later cleared to fly.

Surveys have since shown most offshore workers are against their return.

The Unite union has now said its members are prepared to strike in protest.

MSPs debated the issue at Holyrood on Tuesday while Unite demonstrated outside.

A motion opposing the use of Super Pumas received cross-party support from the SNP, Labour, Lib Dems and the Scottish Greens.

Super Pumas were grounded in April 2016 by the European Aviation Safety Agency.

The ban was lifted in October but it was enforced by authorities in the UK until July.

Helicopter operator CHC has already ended its use of Super Pumas, citing a "lack of commercial demand" from customers.
