New healthy weight movement to tackle childhood obesity
26% of Dundee children are reportedly overweight before they start school.
A new healthy weight movement has been launched to tackle childhood obesity in Dundee.
Open Change and the Dundee Healthy Weight Partnership held a gathering of 100 professionals in the Steeple Church on the Nethergate on Tuesday.
According to organisers, 26% of children in the city are overweight before they start school.
As part of the day, participants were out on the streets exploring the practical barriers and opportunities Dundee presents for maintaining a healthy weight.
The challenges and opportunities of a healthy weight were outlined by child healthy weight advocate and TV expert Professor Paul Gately, with local experts Joyce Thompson and Dr Laura Stewart outlining the picture in Dundee.
Scotland's chief nursing officer, Professor Fiona McQueen also contributed, along with a range of public, private and voluntary sector organisations.
The aim was to share ways of doing things differently.
Director of public health for NHS Tayside Dr Drew Walker said: "We have designed Dundee inadvertently in a way that promotes unhealthy weight and we need to 'de-design' or 'un-design' the way it is at the moment if we want it to be different."
