New £27m recycling and resource plant opens in Aberdeen
The Altens East site is Scotland's most advanced and newest plant.
A £27m recycling and resource facility to process waste from Aberdeen has been officially opened.
The Altens East site is Scotland's most advanced and newest plant.
It collects mixed recyclables from homes and businesses to sort then sell as high-quality materials for re-processing.
Capable of processing 20 tonnes of mixed recycling an hour, the plant accepts glass, cardboard, paper, plastics, and metals.
The centre is part of Aberdeen City Council's Zero Waste project aimed at increasing recycling rates and reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfill.
Aberdeen City Council co-leader councillor Jenny Laing opened the new site on Friday.
She said: "I am delighted to open this fantastic new facility as it will further our commitment to be a Zero Waste city by encouraging recycling as much as we can.
"We have already increased our recycling rates by 25% since the introduction of a new recycling-priority bin to residents six months ago and the new facility will mean more of this waste will be made into new goods which is good for the environment and our residents."
