A man has pleaded guilty to assaulting an off-duty police officer.

Constable Michael Wynn was left with multiple fractures in an attack after a minor road smash outside Police Scotland Tayside Division HQ on Bell Street in Dundee on August 14.

Peter Smith, 31, later claimed he launched the attack because Mr Wynn had "smirked" at him after the officer unintentionally ran into the back of the vehicle being driven by Smith's pregnant girlfriend.

Both Smith and Mr Wynn exited their vehicles, which is when Smith reacted "aggressively" and the assault took place.

Fiscal depute John Adams told Dundee Sheriff Court that witnesses were left "shocked" by the attack:

He said: "When Wynn was taken for X-rays and it was found that he had a fractured cheekbone, fractured lower eye socket, and multiple fractures to the jaw on the left side of his face."

Smith pleaded guilty on indictment to a charge of assault to severe injury.

His defence solicitor Anika Jethwa said: "The concern for him at the time was the potential of harm to his partner. There is no justification for it."

Sheriff George Way deferred sentencing until next month and remanded Smith in custody.
