A protester hurled eggs at Scottish Defence League members as they marched against a mosque.

Charity worker Thomas Roberts was part of a group who turned up to protest the demonstration in Perth on September 10.

Perth Sheriff Court was told the 25-year-old missed his targets with every egg he threw.

Fiscal depute Lisa Marshall told the court: "Officers were on foot patrol when they saw the accused in South Street.

"They watched as he crouched down behind a van and threw a quantity of eggs in the direction of the SDL protesters. The eggs all missed and hit licensed premises, causing no lasting damage.

"It did, however, cause a reaction from the SDL. There was shouting and swearing from the group and various members of the group tried to identify who threw the eggs.

"He ran off and was pursued on foot by police officers and caught a short distance away."

Roberts admitted breaching the peace by throwing eggs at the SDL and was fined £400.

Defence solicitor Paul Ralph said: "He is a charity fundraiser. While the protest may have seemed unpalatable to some, quite clearly you cannot behave like this."

Sheriff William Wood added: "This could have sparked something far more serious."
