Construction work to re-develop the Dundee Science Centre officially began on Tuesday.

The £2m project will double the upper floor space of the building over the next seven months.

As part of the project, a new 'Medical Marvels' exhibition will be installed which will deliver an interactive visitor experience featuring state-of-the-art technologies within areas such as keyhole surgery, anatomy and medical imaging.

Visitors will have the chance to adopt the role of surgeons or clinicians and carry out 'surgery' on interactive torsos.

The re-development will also provide a much improved 'home' for the Science Learning Institute with a 80-seat space for seminars.

Chief executive officer Linda Leuchars said: "This is an extremely exciting time in Dundee Science Centre's evolution and we are thrilled to have reached this milestone.

"Our exciting new facilities will allow us to welcome an increased number of both public and school visits.

"We will of course continue to welcome visitors and deliver an active programme of exhibitions, shows and special events throughout the construction period and look forward to seeing the transformation take shape."

Dundee Science Centre will remain open to visitors throughout the works, with the new space and exhibition due to open to the public in Spring 2018.
