Clinicians, donor families and transplant recipients have gathered for a special event in Aberdeen to mark the start of Organ Donation Week across Scotland.

A total of 15 families gave the go-ahead to organ donation in Grampian last year with 34 transplants taking place as a result, transforming lives across the UK.

The Park Cafe in the city's Hazelhead Park will host an event urging members of the public to sign up the organ donor register.

NHS Grampian's clinical lead for organ donation Dr Catharina Hartman said: "Scotland has the highest sign-up rate to the Organ Donor Register in the UK.

"We know in Grampian our rates are above even the Scottish average. We still need more people to come forward and we need them to let their families know their wishes."

Specialist nurse at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary Claire Morphy said: "Most people pass away in circumstances which mean they would not be able to donate their organs.

"Even if donation is possible, matching organs to potential recipients is a complex task. It doesn't matter if you are young or old, black or white, straight or LGBT: we need everybody."
