New students in Aberdeen have been warned to watch their alcohol intake during freshers week by police.

Additional patrols were be carried out in the city centre and residential areas, with the force combining with student welfare organisations to welcome new people to the city.

Running from September 2-10, the first week of term acts as an induction to university life with an event filled week of action.

Inspector Stuart McAdam said: "Many students will be away from home for the first time which is incredibly exciting but it can also be a daunting experience.

"Being a student can involve moving into a new flat or student halls, meeting new people and enjoying the various social events that are on offer.

"It's a busy period and we encourage students to make the most of this special time but to be aware that being in an unfamiliar place and increasing alcohol consumption can make you more vulnerable and more likely to be a victim of crime."

He added: "Be sensible about how much alcohol you are consuming, know you are getting home safely and look after your friends. Make sure you keep your expensive items such as iPads and phones kept secure.

"Aberdeen is a vibrant city with lots going on and we want students to enjoy this.

"We want to ensure the Freshers period is a safe and enjoyable one and encourage students with any concerns to report these to the police on 101 or speak to any officer."
