MSP calls for tougher action on gambling machines
SNP's Kevin Stewart has previously dubbed the machines the 'crack cocaine of gambling'.
Aberdeen MSP Kevin Stewart is calling on the UK Government to take tougher action to tackle gambling.
The Campaign for Fairer Gambling revealed new figures showing Fixed-Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) have made more than £63m of profit in the city since 2008.
The machines, which Mr Stewart has previously dubbed the "crack cocaine of gambling", raked in more than £1bn Scotland-wide with 40% of that estimated to come from so-called problem gamblers.
He is asking the government for restrictions to be introduced including maximum stakes of £2 and for a ban to be considered.
Mr Stewart said: "These are incredibly concerning figures which show these machines have taken millions out of our communities.
"I previously described these machines as the 'crack cocaine of gambling' because of their addictive nature and the toll that they can have on individuals and their communities. We need to see action now."
