Caird Park sports performance centre given green light
The centre will provide training facilities for badminton, volleyball and rugby.
Proposals for a new £21m sports centre in Dundee have been given the green light.
Councillors voted to approve the regional performance centre for sport at Caird Park during a development management committee meeting on Monday.
The centre will provide training facilities for activities such as badminton, volleyball and rugby.
The site will incorporate existing facilities at the Ronnie McIntosh Athletics stadium and nearby velodrome.
The Tayside Dynamos Powerchair Football Club have showed support for the scheme and hailed it as a step change for disabled sports.
Dundee City Council received 18 letters of objection to the plans, including concerns over the impact of a 17.5-hectare site on protected species living in the area and questions about how the facility would be funded.
Despite the approval, objectors Care for Caird have vowed to fight on and challenge the plans.
Before work can begin, details of how dozens of conditions covering the sites use and how it will remain publicly available land will have to be resolved.
