A major offshore wind project will be constructed with support from Peterhead harbour.

One of the world's largest floating cranes will be moored in the port as part of a deal with Vattenfall over its European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC).

A total of six barges will transport foundations for the 11-turbine scheme in Aberdeen Bay near Trump International Golf Links.

Boskalis, which is Vattenfall's key supplier for the offshore construction and installation awarded the contract to the Peterhead Port Authority, with work to start later this year.

Business and energy minister Paul Wheelhouse welcomed the announcement.

He said: "This is great news for business in Peterhead and an indication of the port's growing reputation as a place which can accommodate some of the most challenging and cutting-edge offshore construction requirements, which is thanks in part to a recent £5m Scottish Government investment to modernise the port, which we announced in December.

"Vattenfall is not alone in recognising the sheer scale of Scotland's offshore wind potential and responding to the unique support that the Scottish Government has made available.

"This reinforces the north east of Scotland's status as one of the world's foremost destinations for the deployment of emerging offshore wind technology."
