A new app that alerts first aid responders to nearby medical emergencies has partnered with East Neuk First Responders to help save lives.

It could potentially revolutionise care in life-threatening emergencies in more remote areas.

Emergency services staff and members of the public with basic life support skills in the area are being asked to sign up as volunteer GoodSAM Responders.

They must be willing to be alerted to nearby emergencies whenever a member of the public triggers the GoodSAM Alerter app.

The Alerter app - which is available free to download - is used to dial 999 and at the same time geolocates and alerts responders showing them where to locate the nearest defibrillator and asking them to provide aid in minutes while an ambulance arrives.

Gillian Duncan, East Neuk First Responders coordinator, said "This medical dispatching app is fantastic news for the people living, working in or visiting the East Neuk who suffer a life-threatening incident, it has huge potential to save more lives in our community."

"It is in addition to our partnership work with the ambulance service but has the potential to get skilled help quicker and more often to those suffering these life threatening emergencies, giving them the best possible chance of survival."
