Children from a Dundee primary school have celebrated the start of an annual reading challenge held in libraries across the city.

Pupils at St Fergus RC primary school took to Ardler Community Library to mark the event, which is part of the Tesco Bank Summer Reading Challenge Scotland.

The challenge encourages children to read six books during the summer holidays, and is run by national charity The Reading Agency in partnership with Scotland's libraries and Tesco Bank.

It will run in Dundee from Thursday June 22 to Saturday August 26, and children can sign up at any of Dundee's 14 local libraries.

Children's library & information services section leader at leisure & culture , Fiona Macpherson, said: "This is one of our favourite times of the year as there is no other free reading activity that involves so many children.

"It gives us another great opportunity to encourage children to choose books freely and introduce families to their library."

Senior community investment manager at Tesco Bank, Adele Mills, said: "Reading for pleasure is a fantastic way of spending some enjoyable time during the long summer holidays so we're delighted that children from Dundee got involved through their local library.

"The Challenge aims to inspire 40,000 children across Scotland to participate during their break from school and events like this will undoubtedly have a positive effect on their future."
