A man was left with no eyebrows or lashes after he was injured setting fire to his own car.
William Clark, 34, suffered burns on his body after he torched his motor near his Aberdeen home.
He told police that he had been injured "cleaning his oven" but doctors noticed he had petrol in both eyes when he was admitted to hospital.
Neighbours heard a loud banging outside then looked out to see smoke pouring from his £8000 car.
The blaze was started in the early hours of the morning on Powis Crescent on December 20 last year.
Clark admitted culpably and recklessly setting fire to his vehicle when he appeared at the city's sheriff court last month.
He woke his partner when he returned with blood on his face and the smell of fire and smoke surrounding him, and repeatedly said: "I'm burned, I'm burned."
The court heard that when his partner asked him if it was anything to do with his car, he nodded and said: "I'm going to get money for the car."
When firefighters turned up to put out the fire, a lighter used for lighting stoves was found near the bumper of the vehicle.
Police described the car owner as acting in a hostile manner after they visited his home.
Ms Begg said: "They saw the accused had no eyebrows or lashes and the front of his hair was singed.
"His face was covered with cream. He told them the cream was for burns sustained cleaning his oven."
Officers noted that part of his scalp was burned as well as his forehead.
Defence lawyer Alex Burn said the car had been written off and his client had been thrown back from an explosion during the fire.
He said Clark suffered from mental health issues, and added: "It's clear to see there's something bizarre going on."
Clark was sentenced on Monday, with Sheriff Alison Stirling placing him on a community payback order with 12 months of supervision.
