Hometown Hero: Dame Evelyn Glennie, solo percussionist
The Aberdeenshire musician regularly plays barefoot to feel the music better.
Hometown Hero is a series celebrating some of the area's best known and widely-loved names.
Born and raised in Aberdeenshire, percussionist Evelyn Glennie inherited some of her musical talent from her father, Herbert Glennie, who was an accordionist in a Scottish country dance band.
She has been profoundly deaf since the age of 12 and claims to have taught herself to hear with parts of her body other than her ears.
The solo percussionist regularly plays barefoot during both live performances and studio recordings to feel the music better.
She also plays the Great Highland Bagpipes and has her own registered tartan known as The Rhythms of Evelyn Glennie.
Dame Evelyn performed at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in London 2012, leading a thousand drummers in the opening piece of music and then playing the Aluphone during the ceremony for lighting the Olympic cauldron.
In 1993, she was made an OBE and was promoted to Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) in the 2007 New Year Honours.
Outside of the music world, she learns her creativity to producing her own range of jewellery and works as a motivational speaker.
