Secondary school pupils from across Dundee are competing in the final day of a week-long computer games design competition.

Now in its 14th year, the Dare Schools Team Challenge encourages S5 pupils to take part and get an insight into teamwork and personal development.

Children work in teams to design and build a 2D single-player game played in a web browser using software supplied by Dundee-based YoYo Games.

All of the participants are studying art and design, computing or information systems and aim to carry on the subjects in S6.

Pupils from Morgan Academy, St Paul's RC Academy, Harris Academy, Craigie High School and Grove Academy made up the teams this year.

The council's city development committee convener, Lynne Short, will hand over the prizes to the winning teams.

She said: "As mother to a 15 year old son that eats, sleeps and breathes gaming this is right up my street and totally exciting.

"Dare Schools Challenge has given a number of young people from Dundee a head-start in the computer games industry because of the way it creates a realistic learning environment for aspiring developers."

She added: "It focuses minds and tightens up the skills needed to launch and sustain a career in this sector.

"The Dare Schools challenge has created a pipeline of the right kind of talent for local companies to continue to succeed in an increasingly challenging global market."
