Pupils in their final year of school who have shown community spirit through efforts at home and school have been recognised at a special ceremony.

The annual presentation of the Lord Provost McManus Young Citizen of the Year Award was made at the City Chambers on Tuesday, when nine pupils were nominated from across Dundee.

The scheme was designed to encourage and recognise the hard work of young people both in school and the wider community.

The winner was Alyssia Smith, of Braeview Academy, who has massed over 200 hours of volunteer work.

Jack Brady, of St Paul's RC Academy, took second place, and Shonagh Quinton, of Morgan Academy, came third.

Alyssia was commended for setting up a lunchtime club to help vulnerable young people with their homework and for dedicating her time to a dance group she founded in the community to improve the self-esteem of younger girls.

She has also delivered workshops in mental health and well-being in her community, and spends her spare time at the Crescent in Whitfield, where she organises exciting opportunities for children.

Lord provost Ian Borthwick said: "This occasion shines the spotlight on the hard work of our young people and their determination to help others around them.

"They are a credit to themselves, their schools and Dundee."

Dundee City Council children and families service convener Gregor Murray said: "These senior pupils all deserve to be congratulated for their efforts in their secondary and the wider community.

"They are tremendous ambassadors for Dundee and our schools.

"Their stories are an inspiration and I wish them all the best as they leave school."
