Tesco has scrapped 5p plastic carrier bags at all its shops in Aberdeen and Dundee.

The supermarket giant has launched a ten-week trial to try out the policy, which will mean shoppers who do not bring their own bag will need to buy a bag for life costing 8p or 10p.

Along with the outlets in Scotland, Tesco rolled out the trial in Norwich.

If considered successful it could be rolled out nationwide.

The retailer said online customers will still be able to buy 5p carrier bags to have their shopping delivered in.

Since the 5p bag charge was introduced in England in 2015 - which Scotland introduced a year earlier - Tesco reports 57% of online customers are opting for bagless deliveries.

The aim of the 5p charge is to encourage bag reuse and reduce waste and litter.

The Scottish Government encourages retailers to donate the proceeds of the charge to good causes.

A Tesco spokesman said: "We are carrying out a short trial in a few stores to look at the impact on bag usage if we remove single-use carrier bags.

"In these stores customers who need a bag can still buy a bag for life which they can reuse."
