Abertay University will raise an unusual glass to toast the unveiling of its new £3.5m science labs next week.

Ahead of the opening on Tuesday, students have created seaweed beer and fava bean vodka.

The new facilities will be used by students studying food and drink, forensics and biomedical sciences.

Fourth year student Kirstie McKillop has already taken advantage to carry out testing of her seaweed-infused beer.

Kirstie said: "I'm using the new labs to do some sensory evaluation and cut my product down to the most popular type of beer.

"I'm really pleased with how it's going and it's great to have access to such modern facilities."

The investment includes the only consumer experience laboratory in Scotland to provide industry-quality climatically controlled booths for sensory analysis of food.

The Guardian ranked the university best in Scotland for food and drink courses and best modern university in Scotland for biosciences in its Good University Guide 2018.
