The secrets of an ancient Dundee graveyard are being unearthed with the help of modern technology.

Specialist scanners are plotting hundreds of head stones to create the first accurate map of the Howff, revealing how people lived and how they died.

A team from Wales are working on over 1750 stones with the oldest dating back to 1577.

The site is the resting place of prominent politicians, jute barons and inventors.

Volunteers who have been transcribing old burial records have unearthed a secret mass grave where 100 people were buried.

Simon Goulding, from the Howff Preservation Society, said: "What's probably happened is the map was drawn by the architect and then the hospital master came along and realigned the headstones so they were in nice long lines because that 1832 map does not match up with the Howff in today's state.

"The map we're doing will be the best map that's ever been produced for this site."
