Talks are underway between political parties across the North as they attempt to form coalitions to takeover the running of the regions councils.

After last week's elections, SNP replaced Labour as the biggest party in Aberdeen City.

The Nationalists claimed 19 seats with Labour finishing third on nine behind the Conservatives who secured 11.

The SNP could strike a deal with either Labour or the Lib Dems that would produce a coalition. However the Conservatives say they are confident of a deal to prevent the SNP forming a ruling administration.

Aberdeenshire councillors are also discussing a possible power sharing deal after no party was able to secure a majority.

Twenty three seats saw the Conservatives become the biggest party with the SNP second with 21 seats. A national Lib Dems spokesman says that while it is up to local groups, they didn't want to work with council groups whose main aim is pushing national party policies of independence or a hard Brexit.

Talks are expected to continue throughout the week until a final decision is made.
