An urgent review is under way at Aberdeen City Council after substantial repairs were ordered for a cycle path without official authorisation.

The work costing £200,000 has now been suspended on the Wellington Brae site in Ferryhill.

Ownership of the land remains in dispute with work first considered in the wake of last year's storm damage.

The local authority admits it was a serious failing by officers not to seek official approval for the project.

Bernadette Marjoram, the local authority's interim director of communities, housing and infrastructure, said: "Aberdeen City Council acknowledges the project did not subsequently follow the required governance procedures and was not presented for committee approval at any stage in the process.

"This is a serious failing by council officers and therefore an urgent review is under way. In light of this, work has been suspended."
