A controversial £120m incinerator in Aberdeen has been approved by councillors.

Members voted 23 to 14 in favour of the centre in East Tullos after a five-hour debate on Thursday.

More than 230 objections were lodged against the scheme and following the vote a member of the public stood up and heckled councillors with a megaphone.

The plant, which could be operational by 2021, will process up to 150,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray every year.

From January 1, 2021, Scottish councils will be banned from putting any biodegradable municipal waste into landfill.

At present, about half of all household waste produced by the three north east local authorities is landfilled.
