Hundreds of oil workers are being drug tested after a syringe was discovered offshore.

The needle was found on Saturday on the Safe Caledonia, which is moored next to BP's Etap platform 100 miles east of Aberdeen.

All of its 447 crew will be tested and two workers whose results were inconclusive have already been flown back to shore for further tests.

A BP spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a syringe was found on board the Safe Caledonia flotel, currently located adjacent to the Etap platform.

"There are of course a number of medical reasons why a syringe may be required by personnel offshore, however, in line with our zero-tolerance policy for substance misuse we have chosen to the take the precautionary step of testing all those on board.

"BP is a responsible operator and we place the utmost importance on ensuring the safety of all those who work on our platforms, therefore we feel this is an appropriate response."

A major investigation was launched in April 2014 when what was suspected to be cocaine was found on the Piper Bravo platform. It later emerged the powder was crushed painkillers.
