A Belgian woman has left nearly £12,000 to the city of Inverness.

Lydia Geernaert, from Ghent, is believed to have visited the Highlands on holiday.

Helen Carmichael, the Provost of Inverness, has now written to the executors of her will to "express her thanks on behalf of the people of the city of Inverness".

In her letter, she said: "I am sure I speak for the citizens of Inverness and my fellow Inverness councillors in saying how proud it makes me feel to know that Ms Geernaert felt such a strong connection with our wonderful city.

"This most generous gift amounting to the sum of £11,939.76 has been placed in the City of Inverness Common Good Fund, which is dedicated to benefit the residents of the Burgh of Inverness."
