A bogus dog warden has approached people walking their pets in Inverness.

Police are investigating if two incidents on November 15 were attempted dognappings.

In both cases the man claimed to work for Highland Council and asked to examine the dogs' microchips.

The council has asked anyone who has a similar experience to contact police.

Inspector Graham Brown said: "We are urging people to be aware of this individual and to carefully check the credentials of anyone claiming to be working as a dog warden.

"We are keen to speak to anyone else who has had a similar approach and anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Police Scotland."

The man was in his 50s with a black moustache, wearing dark clothing including a hat and carrying a flourescent dog lead.

The incidents took place at Milton Pitches and Inshes Park.

Gregor MacCormick, Highland Council's senior environmental health officer, said: "The council can confirm that the individual claiming to be a dog warden is not a council dog warden.

"All our officers have council identification badges and will be happy to show this."
