An RAF Typhoon missed a passenger plane by just 250ft after the civilian pilot dived to avoid it.

The BAE Jetstream was flying near Wick in the Highlands on June 14 when its pilot spotted the fighter jet hurtling towards him at 400mph.

He disconnected the plane's autopilot and pushed its nose down, sending it into a dive.

The pilot later reported the near-miss to the UK Airprox Board and said he believed there was a high risk of a collision.

It carried out an inquiry and concluded the incident was the result of a late sighting by the pilot of the Jetstream and a non-sighting by the Typhoon pilot.

The investigation also found the RAF Lossiemouth-based Typhoon's transponder was not working.

The Airprox Board ranked it as a category B incident - the second most serious.
