A farmer is using cotton underpants to test the quality of his soil.

Iain Green buried the garments in his fields at Corskie Farm near Elgin in Moray to see how decomposed they get in the ground.

He can then tell how fertile the soil is by how much of the Y-fronts remain when dug up after eight weeks.

It is now hoped farmers across Scotland will take part in the experiment to learn more about soil fertility.

The trial was conducted with Quality Meat Scotland and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.

Mr Green said: "Yeah we did think it was strange - but we did think it was a laugh as well - and it would be quite enjoyable for the fellow farmers to come along see the results.

"We just decided to pick seven different sites. we buried seven pairs in different types of fields. Soil is the best asset you have."
