"Slippery rails" caused delays for a ScotRail train between Inverness and Glasgow.

The 8.45am Queen Street service was running 15 behind schedule on Thursday morning.

It was expected to make up the difference by the time it arrived in Glasgow, however.

ScotRail initially believed slippery rails would cause hours-long disruption and delay several trains

The problems began after a Virgin East Coast was delayed by 40 minutes near Culloden.

A ScotRail spokesman said: "The 7.55am Virgin East Coast service from Inverness to London Kings Cross left Aviemore approximately 40 minutes late due to encountering slippery rails in the Culloden area.

"This has had a knock on effect and delayed one of our train."

"Slippery rails" are usually caused by falling leaves and can make it difficult for trains to slow down or stop.

ScotRail recently said it expects to spend £2.6m this autumn clearing leaves from tracks.
