A 28-year-old footballer has died after being diagnosed with a brain tumour while on a honeymoon with his wife.

Calum Riddell, who played for Nairn County in the Highland League, died following his battle with stage 4 Glioblastoma.

The midfielder was diagnosed while on holiday with new wife Rebekah in July.

He died at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Tuesday.

A Nairn County spokesman said: "Nairn County Football Club is saddened to confirm that our player, Calum Riddell, has passed away very peacefully surrounded by family and friends. He was 28."

It added: "The match at Rothes on Wednesday had already been postponed given Calum's condition and Saturday's home match against Huntly will be postponed, too.

"The club would like to thank Rothes FC, Huntly FC and the Scottish Highland Football League for their understanding at this difficult time."

Riddell returned to his boyhood club Nairn last year after coming through the youth ranks, making 28 appearances before his illness.

A minute's silence will be held at Saturday's Highland League games.

More than £40,000 had been raised for the Calum Riddell Fund in support of the newlywed.

The club spokesman added: "Sunday's Benefit Match for the Calum Riddell Fund between Nairn County FC and the Calum Riddell All Stars will still go ahead at the request of Calum's wife and family.

"Everyone at the club extends their sincere condolences to Calum's family and friends and asks that their privacy be respected at this time."
