A man has died after a blaze ripped through a flat in the Western Isles.

Emergency services were called to a fire at a home on Macaulay Road in Stornoway.

The blaze happened in a ground floor flat just after 7.30pm on Saturday.

Police confirmed a 58-year-old man died.

Detective inspector Richard Baird said: "A joint investigation with the fire service will be carried out.

"Enquiries are at a very early stage.

"As is standard, a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
