A Highland Games near Banff in Aberdeenshire had to be abandoned after a "tornado" swept through the site.

Villagers in Cornhill had been enjoying the 20th annual event at the playing fields on Saturday.

After a spell of "beautiful" sunshine, the storm blew in, wreaking havoc on the park, lifting the first aid tent over a marquee and into the arena.

Damage was caused to many of the stalls and tents including the stage where 150 highland dancers had been performing earlier in the afternoon.

Event organisers guided everyone to safety and stopped people entering the park.

Games secretary Shona Hay said: "Everything was running great until then, the sun was shining, it was a lovely day then suddenly torrential rain began.

"Everyone ran for cover, the rain was so heavy, it was unbelievable. It came out of no-where and the noise was terrifying.

"Parents were shouting and running trying to find their children and get into the main marque. Once calmed, the wind and rain stopped, it was a lovely day again except the park was a riot."
