A man has been crushed to death while working at a quarry in the Highlands.

Pawel Kocik, a machine operator, suffered fatal injuries at Leiths' Kishorn Quarry in Wester Ross.

The 34-year-old succumbed to chest injuries in the incident at the quarry in Wester Ross on Wednesday.

An investigation is under way involving he Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Police Scotland.

A crowdfunding page has been launched to raise money to go towards funeral costs in a bid to help Mr Kocik's wife, Karolina, and five-year-old daughter Julia.

The campaign has so far raised £678 of the targeted £5000.

Friends have described Mr Kocik as a "wonderful man".

A friend said online: "He was a wonderful man and the best pal you could wish for.

"I could always share with him my craziest ideas and he would always understand.

"I will miss him very much but now I am trying to do what we both promised each other, that if anything happens to any of us we will take care of our loved ones."

Speaking to STV News, Grant Milne, managing director of the Leiths quarries division, said: "All I can say is there was an incident on Wednesday at Kishorn Quarry which unfortunately resulted in a fatal accident and we lost one of our employees.

"The HSE is currently carrying out an investigation. Our sincere condolences and thoughts are being passed on at this very difficult time.

"Until the HSE investigation is concluded, I cannot comment further."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "We received a report of the sudden death of a 34-year-old man at a quarry site in the Kishorn area of Strathcarron at around 11.20am on Wednesday."

"We've been liaising with the HSE. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."

A spokesman for HSE said: "We have been made aware of this and we're assisting police with their inquiries.

"Police retain primacy in line with work-related death protocol."
