The man who holds the world record for the fastest hat-trick scored in football has died aged 71.

Tommy Ross netted three goals in 90 seconds while playing for Ross County against Nairn County on November 24, 1964.

The goals, scored at Victoria Park, earned him a Guinness World Record which is yet to be beaten.

During the 1964 to 1965 season he scored 44 goals while still a teenager. He had started playing for the Dingwall side aged 15.

His career later took him to Peterborough United, York City and Wigan Athletic as well as Rossendale United.

He also played for Brora Rangers before becoming involved in coaching.

In the mid-nineties, he took the reigns of Tain-based St Duthus FC for several seasons.

Two of his sons, Stuart and Andrew Ross, are now the management team in charge of a newly-revived St Duthus FC.

In a tribute posted on social media, the North Caledonian FA club said: "Everyone at St Duthus Football Club wishes to extend their deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to Tommy's family and close friends at this difficult time."

The club has asked for donations to be made to Alzheimer's Scotland.
