A woman has died after her car burst into flames outside a village church.

The woman was in a car park just outside the Highland village of Sutherland when a fire took hold on Friday afternoon.

Fire crews were called to the scene outside Assynt Church, in Lochinver, at around 4.45pm and members of the public tried to help.

However, the 37-year-old woman became trapped inside and the blaze destroyed the Skoda. She died at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: "At around 4.45pm on Friday, emergency services attended a car on fire at Lochinver. Sadly a woman in her 30s died at the scene.

"Next of kin have been informed. Enquiries are continuing into the incident but there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

"As with all sudden deaths a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."
