North Sea fabrication yard sold for £5m to unnamed buyer
The McDermott Yard in Ardersier closed in 2001 after decades building offshore platforms.
A fabrication yard used in the early days of the North Sea oil and gas industry has been sold for £5m.
The McDermott Yard in Ardersier near Inverness closed in 2001, while the company that owned it went into administration last year.
The yard and 400 acres of land surrounding it have now been sold to an unnamed buyer.
The McDermott Yard opened in 1972 and employed more than 4500 at its height, building platforms for the oil and gas industry.
Before it went into administration, the former owner Port of Ardersier Ltd was given permission to bring the site back into use, potentially for the construction of offshore wind farms.
Administrators KPMG received six offers for the yard.
In 2011, the Nigg fabrication yard on the Moray Firth was bought by the Global Energy Group to be redeveloped as a service centre for the energy industry.
