Designs revealed for cliff-top St Kilda visitor centre
Developers want to build the facility in Mangersta, Lewis, about 60 miles from the archipelago.
Designs for a St Kilda visitor centre on a cliff-top on Lewis have been revealed.
Developers plan to build the centre in Mangersta, about 60 miles from the archipelago, which was abandoned by inhabitants in the 1930s.
The prospect of building on Hirta, St Kilda's largest island, was ruled out because of the island chain's remoteness and its status as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Concerns have also been raised about the decision to build the centre in Mangersta.
Norwegian firm Reiulf Ramstad Architects is working with Skye-based Dualchas to design the centre, which could welcome its first visitors by 2020.
Dualchas architect Ruaraidh Flyn said: "It is an inspiring project and site. Our proposals are site-specific and influenced by the extreme climatic and locational conditions.
"The new centre has to be a world-class project and will provide a focal point for the regeneration of an existing island community, capturing and interpreting the story of St Kilda, whilst providing an experience of Hebridean culture and landscape."
