"Extensive searches" have been carried out for hillwalker Goffredo Bondanelli but he remains missing.

Police said they coordinated with mountain rescue teams and the UK coastguard in Lochaber over the weekend to look for the 56-year-old German.

Mr Bondanelli was last seen in Fort William on May 3 boarding a train to Lochailort, where he planned to start a five-day walk to Glenfinnan.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Searches involved police officers and dogs, members of Lochaber and RAF mountain rescue teams and UK Coastguard personnel, and focused on high and low-level areas between the villages of Lochailort and Glenfinnan, and specific areas between Loch Ailort and Loch Eilt, where it is believed Mr Bondanelli planned to camp.

"Unfortunately, Mr Bondanelli is still missing and officers would urge walkers in the area to remain vigilant and to report anything that may assist the search."

Police added Mr Bondanelli would likely have been camping out on hills including Coire na Cnamha, Lochan Feith Easian, Sgurr an Utha and possibly walking on the nearby A830 at times.

Mr Bondanelli is an experienced and well-equipped hillwalker and has a green tent and a dark rucksack.

He is around 5ft 10in, with an athletic build and dark greying hair. He also possibly has stubble or a light beard. He was wearing dark outdoor clothing when he set off.

It is thought Mr Bondanelli was due to return by train to Fort William or possibly Arrochar in Argyll by May 8 but he may have travelled by bus.

Police are making enquiries in Argyll to establish if Mr Bondanelli has been in the area.

Officers urge anyone in the Lochaber or Argyll area who have seen a man matching Mr Bondanelli's description, or who have any other information that could assist in the search, to get in touch by calling 101.
