A man and woman have been charged after a serious assault on a 52-year-old man in Inverness.

He was taken to Raigmore Hospital after being found with head injuries on Millburn Road on Sunday and was later transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged with causing assault to severe injury and perverting the course of justice, while a 21-year-old woman was also arrested and has been charged with perverting the court of justice.

They are expected to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court on Thursday.

"The public response via social media was especially helpful to the investigation."
