Netflix is allowing users to download TV shows and films to watch offline for the first time.

The new feature, which was released on Wednesday, lets people playback videos on their devices without needing any internet connection.

Those with a Netflix app will now be able to click on a "download and watch later" icon which will temporarily store their favourite shows on their phones or tablets.

Eddy Wu, Netflix's director of product innovation, said "while many members enjoy watching Netflix at home, we've often heard they also want to continue their Stranger Things binge while on airplanes and other places where internet is expensive or limited."

Other video streaming services, such as Amazon and Sky, already run subscription-based downloads. However, Netflix's new feature comes with no extra cost as they aim to stay ahead of their rivals.
